Calvin J Li Memorial Foundation is pleased to announce the successful completion of our inaugural Essay Contest "Dreams of My Parents".

We received 55 submissions. The wonderful stories told in these essays touched us deeply.

We selected the following essays for the Awards:

First Place ($1000)

Second Place ($500/each)

“Someone” by Daifeng Li, 9th grade, from California

“Home is Carried in the Palm of the Hand” by Jenny Deng, 10th grade, from Texas

Third Place ($250/each)

“My Parents’ Dream” by Grace Chen, 11th grade, from Maryland

“Miles and Miles Away” by Ester Chi, 9th grade, from New Jersey

“A Theme in D Flat Major” by Benjamin Sun, 10th grade, from New Jersey

Honorable Mention ($100/each)

“Funny Moments of Our Childhood” by Kristen Ngai, 10th grade, from New Jersey

“A leap of Faith and a Leap over a Barrier” by Weining Ding, 11th grade, from Virginia

“The Girl in my Dream” by Jessica Wang, 6th grade, from Florida

“Of Branches” by Kelly Du, 9th grade, from California

“Finding Her American Dream” by Dena Shao, 10th grade, from Maryland


On Mar 28, we will hold a Virtual Celebration Ceremony on Zoom. Please join us to hear the stories behind these essays, and have a chance to ask questions to these talented young writers.

Calvin J Li Memorial Foundation, in partnership with Eyre Writing Center (EWC) and United Chinese Americans (UCA), presents an Essay Contest tilted “Dreams of My Parents”. High School students of Asian Pacific decent whose parents are immigrants to North America are encouraged to participate. The first-place winner will be awarded $1000.
